1. To which tanks is the fuel bunkered. Into empty tanks, or non-empty tanks where
another fuel is inside already?

Please select the right type (empty tanks or non empty tanks) to avoid later issues. Some vessels in the past reported mistakenly always “bunkering in empty tanks”, as a result the old rests/remainings of fuels where never sorted out, the vessel had a list of 20 different available fuels on board, many of them only with a rest/remaining amount of 2-3mt or similar.

Please see in below picture the 2 options, Non-empty and empty tanks:

2. Select correct fuel type

With the Bunkering the crew always receives a BDN document. In This BDN document the fuel specs should be written.

In below BDN product name “VLSFO” is mentioned. This naming sometimes confuses crews, as they do not know which fuel label to select e.g. RMD80, or RMG380, etc.. The crew here needs to check the viscosity, which is 62, and then select the correct fuel type. In this case RMD80 seems logic, as RMD80 can have a maximum viscosity of 80 cST and as here 62cST were specified this would be the best choice.
In the best case the Bunker supplier specifies the exact fuel type.

Below BDN shows the top category of the fuel “VLSFO”, and specifies the exact ISO fuel label “RMG380”.
So here the BDN document well explains the exact fuel type, so in S-Log it will be easy for the crew to select the right fuel type.

The below table is a table showing the residual fuels. The fuel types RMD80, RME180 etc. are stated there. The most important item to distinguish between the fuels is the viscosity. So when your ship bunkers a fuel, please check the stated viscosity in the BDN document, and then select the right fuel type.
After the viscosity also the density can give hints about the fuel type. In below picture it is also shown which fuels are considered as LFO and which as HFO. Such a table can e.g. be found here:

Before 2024 the viscosity limit between LFO and HFO was 80cst. From 2024 onwards this is lowered to 20 cst. Making e.g. RMD80 also an HFO.

3. Biofuels
S-Insight Log software  allows to report Biofuels in line with the latest IMO regulations.

If your ship uses Biofuel please use the latest software version. In the upper right side of the
software you will find an user guide, which gives you examples of Biofuel reporting.
A real Biofuel needs a POS Document (Proof of Sustainability).
