How to report Biofuel in s-Log?

Guidelines for Biofuel Reporting in S-Log

The s-Insight | Log Recorder has been updated to ensure compliance with EU ETS/MRV and IMO DCS/CII regulations for biofuel reporting. Below are the detailed steps and guidelines to follow when reporting biofuel activities.

  1. Fuel Types and Categories

Biofuels in s-Insight | Log are classified into multiple types, including:

  • Bio-diesel (FAME, FAEE, etc.)
  • Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)
  • Bio-methanol & Bio-ethanol
  • Gaseous Biofuels (Bio-LNG, Bio-hydrogen, etc.)
  • Other Biofuels

A Blend category is also available, allowing users to report fuel mixtures (e.g., 30% FAME + 70% DMB).

  1. Bunkering Overview

Bunkering operations are categorized into:

  1. Bunkering in Empty Tanks
  1. Bunkering Fossil Fuel: Select a 100% fossil fuel type.
  2. Bunkering Biofuel: Select the exact biofuel type and raw material (multiple raw materials can be added).
  3. Bunkering a Blend: Choose Blend and enter all components separately.

📌 Mandatory Biofuel Parameters (from PoS certificate) to be reported:

  • Raw Material
  • Certificate Number
  • Energy Content (MJ)
  • Total GHG Emission Intensity (gCO2e/MJ)
  • EU RED Compliance (Yes/No).

  1. Bunkering in Non-Empty Tanks (Mixing & Topping Up)

For fuel mixing (topping up a tank), the following must be reported:

  • Old Fuel Type (fuel in the tank before bunkering).
  • New Fuel Type (fuel being added).
  • Resulting Fuel Type (the final blend after mixing).

If the new fuel is a Blend, additional constraints apply to ensure correct fuel type selection.

  1. Fuel Blend Logic

s-Insight applies specific blend restrictions:

  • If two fuels of the same category are mixed, the result should remain within that category.
  • If fuels of different types are mixed, the result is classified as a Blend.

📌 Example:

  • Mixing two HFOs → Result remains HFO
  • Mixing MDO/MGO with Biofuel → Result becomes a Blend.

  1. Reporting Examples
  2. Bunkering a New Biofuel Blend into an Empty Tank
  1. Create a new Bunkering event
  2. Select "Bunkering in tanks considered as empty"
  3. Choose Blend (Fossil + Biofuel) and input required fields
  4. Save & send report to s-Insight | Log Server

  1. Bunkering a Biofuel Blend into a Non-Empty Tank (Topping Up)
  1. Create a new Bunkering event
  2. Select "Bunkering in non-empty tanks/mixing"
  3. Choose old fuel type, then select new fuel type as Blend
  4. Define resulting fuel type and input required details
  5. Save & send to s-Insight | Log Server

  1. Bunkering a Blend with Multiple PoS Certificates
  1. Create a new Bunkering event
  2. Use "Bunkering in tanks considered as empty"
  3. Insert Fuel as Blend (Fossil + Biofuel from PoS 1 + Biofuel from PoS 2)
  4. Save & send report to s-Insight | Log Server

  1. Additional Considerations

Automatic BDN Numbers

  • When fuels are mixed or topped up, s-Insight automatically generates a unique BDN number.

Delayed PoS Validation

  • If the vessel does not receive the PoS certificate immediately after bunkering, validations will be triggered after 14 days.

CII Compliance

  • Biofuel usage impacts Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) reporting. Ensure correct reporting of fuel types, blending ratios, and sustainability compliance.
